NASA and Aliens: Were the Conspiracists Telling the Truth?
A “multi-decade” classified project in order to reverse-engineer a UFO, “nonhuman” biological matter, a non-partisan coverup of UFOs––these are just some of the claims Major David Grusch made on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) during the congressional meeting in July 26, 2023.
Maj. David Grusch is a retired Air Force intelligence officer who also served as an adviser to the Pentagon’s Unidentified Aerial Phenomena taskforce., He caught the attention of the House Oversight Committee by whistleblowing on the purported coverup of the U.S. government’s UAP recovery program.
But don’t put on tinfoil hats yet. While Grusch’s wild claims during the congressional meeting were under oath, none of them have been verified; the possibility of perjury is still a topical matter. What can be said insofar as public knowledge is that the government is taking actions to check the veracity of his claims.
Shortly after the congressional meeting, precisely on September 14, 2023, NASA released the results of a case study that began on June 9, 2022. NASA reports, “the agency is commissioning a study team to examine unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs) – that is, observations of events in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena – from a scientific perspective.”
Despite the year long study, the report was unfruitful. Due to an unsubstantial amount of data, NASA was unable to prove or disprove the origin of UAP’s being from space. The administrator of the study, Bill Nelson put it like this, “The NASA independent study team did not find any evidence that UAP have an extraterrestrial origin, but we don’t know what these UAP are.”
So why was the study team unable to find any evidence?
During the case study, the lack of data came from the government classification of data sensors. Nicola Fox, the associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate explained it like this: “If a fighter jet took a picture of the Statue of Liberty, then that image would be classified not because of the subject in the picture, but because of the sensors on the plane.”
Fox underlined the need for public access to high-quality data, as it can empower the NASA independent study team to fulfill the commission. By further declassification of sensors from the government, meaning to open to public knowledge, the independent study team can glean the data necessary to investigate UAPs further.
But why is a team that is under the commission of NASA, a government agency, unable to use classified tools for data collection?
NASA intentionally commissioned an independent team to perform a study to maintain complete transparency and impartiality. To achieve this, the data and tools used must be open to the public.
Whether aliens are real or not is still up to public debate. While this is the closest evidence so far to corroborate the legitimacy of conspiracy theories, until we further demystify methods of data collection for concrete evidence to emerge, the accuracy of David Grusch’s claims or the true nature of UAPs will remain unknown.
